Michael Wilson is a full time entrepreneur and business owner. His experience as an independent businessman started when he was very young. Even in his early teens, Michael was selling something to someone, and even had early attempts at cross-marketing.
He operated a house-painting business from high school through college. Truly an entrepreneur at heart, Michael took a break to start a family and got a regular job to support them.
That ‘break’ lasted about 22 years. During that time, he married Melana, clearly the best decision of his life. They raised 3 beautiful daughters, obviously the next best decision of his life.
In reality, both Michael and Melana detoured from the plans they each had when they met and instead decided to marry and raise a family in Kansas City, Missouri. Melana got to be the entrepreneur during those years – she started and ran a Wedding Cake business once the girls were old enough so she could devote the time to it.
Michael went to work for Colgate-Palmolive in Kansas City, actually using his degree in Chemistry; then from the lab quickly over to operations management. Excellent company, but 2 years later, Michael was back in the lab, this time in Research and Development with Southwest Grease and Oil.
Nearly 20 years later, Michael retired from ExxonMobil, having completed stints in:
R&D: Multiple products developed, scaled up, and sold
Manager: Lab, Tech Services, R&D
Technical Services: Manager during acquisition by Exxon
Field Technical Advisor: Exxon side this time
Sales – Distributor Business Consultant : Oh, what a job!
Marketing – Distributor Business
Here’s how it happened:
Southwest was purchased by Exxon, then Exxon and Mobil Merged to become ExxonMobil.
As Mike tells it, “I knew in my heart that I had to get back to my roots….I had to find a way to be a business owner. It was tough to leave ExxonMobil because I knew I would never work for a better company. Melana had already started Value Property Investors and so, really I went to work for her. Quite a change from ExxonMobil. We worked as real estate investors full time for several years and then started adding products and services”.
Value Property Investors operates as Homes in Ashburn VA for real estate ventures, specializing in helping home buyers in Loudoun county Virginia.
Drawing on his wealth of experience in business and marketing, and driven by his love for working with business owners, Michael began offering coaching and consulting services. He provides online marketing coaching for business owners who still do their own marketing.
